- Place of residence: Herremand i Fjenneslev
Stormand boende i Fjenneslev.
Asser Rig (Hvide) was a Squire (Herremand) and Grandee
(Stormand/Høvding) residing in Fjenneslev. It was during his time
that the Sorø Abbey (Sorø Kloster) was founded. In Fjenneslev Church
can be seen a whitewash painting, which displays Asser Rig and his
wife giving gifts to God: he himself giving the church, and her a
gold ring.
Asser Rig was foster-father to the murdered Danish nobleman Knud
Lavard's son Valdemar. Born one week after the murder of his father,
Valdemar grew up in Asser's home in Fjenneslev together with Asser's
two sons Esbern and Absalon. Esbern became one of Valdemar's
retainers. Absalon was made bishop of Roskilde, in 1158, largely as a
result of Valdemar's putting in an appearance just when the canons
were about to elect a new bishop. Later Absalon was made Archbishop
of Lund in 1178. Absalon is credited as being the founder of
Københaven (Copenhagen).
